Text Neck 101

Neck pain is so prevalent in people 13-25 years old, which spurred the coining of this new term. “Text Neck” is the term used to describe pain from letting your head hang forward. It’s imperative to have good posture so you can alleviate issues before they arise. Still wondering if chiropractors in Wellington, FL, are all they’re cracked up to be?

What is Text Neck?

Texting or using any mobile device causes your head to dip forward, causing stress on your neck, shoulders, and back muscles. On average, human heads weigh 8-12 pounds. The greater the degree you angle your head, the heavier it becomes. At 15°, the weight increases to 27 lbs, and at 60°, it rises to a 60 lbs weight pulling on your muscles. It should come as no surprise that poor posture carries risk. After all, as children, we’ve been warned of the dangers of slouching from our Grandparents. Here are the most common symptoms associated with text neck:

  • Pain in neck, shoulders, and back
  • Reduced mobility
  • Stiff neck
  • Chronic, sharp, or radiating pain in the upper back
  • Possible neurological damage to arms and hands

While not all cases are severe, sometimes you may just experience headaches and soreness. Along with the overuse of handheld gadgets, bad posture from sitting and standing can cause similar pains as text neck. You can try stretching, but many people need to visit a chiropractor for relief.

Chiropractic Adjustments

Text neck syndrome and poor posture can both misalign the vertebrae in your spine. Chiropractors are highly skilled professionals who can adjust spinal columns, relieving pain by snapping you back into place.
